Arris Rails
Arris rails are the support beams behind feather-edge fencing. They run horizontally between your posts and give your fence the strength to stay upright, which is useful when the wind picks up. You usually need two or three per section, depending on the height of your fence.
We stock flat-end and mortised arris rails in 2.4m and 3m lengths, pressure treated for long life. Match them with brackets or morticed posts, and you’re good to go.

What Types of Arris Rail Do You Need?
There are two types of arris rail. Flat-end and morticed.
Flat end rails are the simple option. You fix them to your posts using brackets, easy to fit, easy to replace. If you’re repairing a fence or adding a new section, these do the job without fuss.
Mortified rails are shaped to slot into morticed fence posts. It gives a cleaner look and stronger hold, especially over long runs. Ideal if you want a tidy finish or you’re building from scratch.
Just make sure you match the rail type to the post type. Mortified rails won’t work with standard flat-end posts.
What sizes are available?
Most arris rails come in lengths of 2.4m (8ft) or 3m (10ft). That's enough to span standard fence bays. You can always cut them down if needed. Just remember to treat the end cuts to protect the timber.
They’re pressure-treated to fight off rot and insects. Available in green or brown finishes. Green weathers in over time. Brown looks a bit more traditional straight out of the gate.
How Many Rails Do You Need?
Here's a simple rule of thumb.
- Fences up to 4ft high - 2 rails per bay
- 5ft to 6ft fences - 3 rails per bay
- Over 6ft or windy areas - 3 to 4 rails per bay
Don’t Forget the Extras
If you’re using flat-end arris rails, you’ll need brackets to hold them in place. These come in different sizes. 225mm and 300mm are the most common.
If you’re fitting into concrete morticed posts, grab a mortice adapter for a snug fit.
Some other bits worth picking up are:
- Galvanised screws - rust-resistant and fence-friendly
- Post caps - keep rain out of the post tops
- Wood preserver - for any freshly cut ends
These little things keep your fence stronger for longer.
Installation tips
- Use a spirit level when fixing rails. Nobody wants a wonky fence
- Pre-drill your brackets to stop the wood from splitting
- Treat all cuts to stop rot creeping in
- If you’re replacing a single rail, support the boards above it while you work
Why are Arris rails cut the way they are
The angled shape isn’t just for show. It helps water run off instead of sitting on the timber. Less water means less rot and a longer timespan.
It also adds strength. The triangle shape helps brace the fence, especially in bad weather. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference once the fence is up and facing wind, rain, and the occasional football.
Can you mix morticed and flat-end rails?
The short answer is, not really.
They serve the same purpose but fix in different ways. Morticed rails need matching morticed posts. Flat-end rails need brackets. Mixing the two usually leads to a wobbly setup and a lot of swearing.
Pick one system and stick with it. It will look better and hold up longer.

Do I need brackets?If you are install a new fence with morticed fence posts you would purchase the morticed arris rails that would not need any brackets. If the posts are all ready installed you would purchase the flat end arris rails and add brackets to them.
