Standing in the decking aisle pretending to know what you're looking at is pretty normal. But once the basics click, it all starts to make sense.
We stock a solid range of Q-Deck softwood boards, including the Canterbury, Winchester, and York styles. All pressured treated. All built for UK gardens. And all much better than other types of decking that you were thinking about using.
What Are They Made From?
All of the decking boards on this page are made from softwood. This is strong, easy to work with, and doesn’t cost the earth. The boards are pressure-treated. This means that the preservative goes deep into the timber. That helps protect against rot, insects and whatever else the British elements decide to throw at it.
If you want to build a deck that lasts more than one summer, pressure-treated softwood is a great choice.
Canterbury, Winchester, and York. They’re not all the same.
These aren’t just random names. Let's quickly run through what the differences are.
- Canterbury boards are dual-sided. One is smooth. The other grooved. Pick the side you want showing when you install them. It gives you a choice between a clean, modern look or something more textured.
- Winchester boards are grooved on one side. This gives you that classic ribbed decking finish. Great grip. Looks good. Job done.
- York boards are a bit narrower and smoother than the others. A good option if you want tighter lines or a less chunky look overall.
Most boards are 3.6m or 4.8m long. Longer boards mean fewer joins, giving a cleaner look. Shorter boards are easier to handle and better for awkward shapes or smaller spaces.
Here's the bit people get caught out by: Decking boards are sold by their nominal size (the size before they’re planed smooth). So a board listed as 38x150mm will actually measure close to 27x144mm once it's finished. This isn’t a trick. It’s just how the timber trade works.
Always work off the actual size when measuring up. This will save you time and stress in the long run. Of course, if you are struggling with this, just give us a call, and we can help you sort it out.
How Much Decking Do You Need?
A good rule of thumb is that you’ll need around 7 linear metres of decking boards to cover 1 square metre of deck. That allows for gaps between boards and some waste.
If your decking is 12m², then you need roughly 84m of board. We always recommend adding an extra couple of boards to the order. One might get damaged, mis-cut, or be used as a makeshift plank during the build. These things happen.
