What Makes 4x4 Better Than Other Fence Posts?
4x4 (that's 100m x 100m) is the sweet spot for strength and value. It’s the size we recommend for most standard fencing jobs, including feather edge, close board, and panel fencing. You get a strong post that can take the weight of the panels, resist the wind, and stay straight over time.
Smaller sizes like 3x3 can flex, split, or lean. This is especially true if your fence gets knocked by pets, kids kicking a football against it, or a gusty weekend. 4x4 avoids all that. They cost more, but you’ll only need to dig the hole once. It's worth it.
Treated to Last
All the 4x4 wooden fence posts on our website are UC4 pressure-treated. This means they’re rated for direct contact with the ground. The treatment goes deep into the timber to protect it against rot, decay, and insect attack. Basically, they’re made for being outside. You can dig them in, backfill with post mix, and not worry about them falling to bits in five years.
We use Tanalith Extra. This is one of the best wood treatments on the market. You’re not just getting a green or brown surface, you’re getting real protection, inside and out.
Brown or Green
You have two choices when it comes to colours.
Both versions are pressure-treated as mentioned earlier. Its just more about looks and what suits your garden. Brown posts blend in well with most timber fence panels and tend to keep their colour for longer. Green posts start out lighter and change colour over time, which some people prefer. Whichever colour you pick you get the same protection.
What Size Should You Buy?
If you’re not sure what length to buy, theres a quick rule to follow, which is to add 600mm to the height of your fence. That gives you enough length to set the fence post deep into the ground so that it stays in.
Let’s look at an example. If your fence is 6 feet tall (1.8m), pick a 2.4m post. For a 5ft fence, a 2.1m post would be perfect. If you’re using heavier panels or building on a slope, go longer and cut it down if needed.

Different Types of 4x4 Fence Posts
We stock solid 4x4 posts and slotted versions (called H posts). Solid ones are great if you’re using rails and feather edge boards or fixing panels with brackets. Slotted posts are ideal for standard fence panels. Just drop them in and you’re away. No brackets, and no fuss.
We also have Duluxe planed posts. These come with a smooth finish if you want something a bit more polished for gates or front-facing fences.
If you’re the type of person who likes things to look neat, you could stick a post cap on top. Its not just for show. It helps keep rain off the cut end of the post, which means a longer life.
