Wooden fence posts are the bit you don’t noticed. That is until they rot, lean, or fall over in a storm. So its worth getting them right the first time.
We stock a wide range of treated timber fence posts in sizes from 3x3 up to 6x6. If you’re replacing one post or building a full run of fencing, we have all the options in stock, ready for collection or delivery.
All our posts are pressured treated with Tanalith Extra. This helps them last longer in the ground. We recommend going for 4x4 posts if you’re building new fencing. They’ll outlast 3x3 fencing and the price difference isn’t huge.

Why Choosing Strong Wooden Fence Posts is Important
A fence is only as strong as the posts holding it up. Pick the right ones, and your fence will stand firm for years. Go too small, untreated, or too short, and you’ll be back out there digging again before you know it.
We have timber posts for just about every job. Garden fencing, boundary lines, gates and heavier commercial work. All of them are pressure treated with Tanalith Extra. This means they are built for life outside and can deal with the rain, frost and mud without issues.
What Size Should I Choose?
We always recommend 4x4 posts. They’re strong, steady, and handle standard fence panels without any issues. If you are not sure what size you need, then pick these. You can’t go wrong.
We also stock 3x3 posts as well. These are fine for smaller jobs. Maybe for a short run of picket fencing or something low. If its full height panels you are using stick with 4x4 posts. It only costs you a few pound more but will be cheaper in the long run.
For bigger fencing jobs and heavier setups (tall fences, large gates or exposed sites) we also have 5x5 and 6x6 options. If you’re building something big, these are your best bet.
How Long Should They Be?
This all depends on the height of your fence. The usual rule is to sink about a third of the post into the ground. So, for a 6ft fence, you will ideally want a 9ft post.
We stock lengths from 6ft (1.8m) to 10ft (3m), so you can pick the one that is best for your needs.
Brown or Green?
It’s not just for looks. Well, ok, it mostly is. Both green and brown posts are pressure-treated to the same standard (UC4 grade), which means they’re rated for contact with the ground. Green timber fades to a natural grey over time, while brown holds its colour longer. It all comes down to personal taste.
Slotted or Solid?
Slotted posts are popular for a reason. They let you slide fence panels straight in with no brackets needed, and the finish is nice and clean. They are also quicker to fit, especially if you are working on your own.
Solid posts are more traditional and will work well for feather edge or custom fencing, where you might be using fixing rails and boards instead of just slotting in panels. They take a bit more time but are solid, reliable, and easy to work with.
Finishing Touches
Once your posts are in, top them off with caps. It’s a small detail, but it helps shed rainwater and stops the top of the post from soaking up moisture. Plus, it just makes it look nice.
