Landscaping in winter – what you need to know

Landscaping in winter – what you need to know

You may think of landscaping your garden as something you do in the summer when the weather is warm and dry.

However, the winter months can be a fantastic time to get any landscaping you need to do sorted.

If you’re still not convinced, here are four of the best reasons why your landscaping should be done during wintertime.

1. Mortar and concrete stays strong

If you’re installing paving slabs or fence posts, you may use mortar or concrete to keep everything in place.

Using mortar or concrete in the summertime can be a frustrating process as you have to constantly keep it wet so it doesn’t dry too quickly. Otherwise, it may shrink and weaken, meaning you’re more likely to experience issues.

The chilly winter climate slows down the drying process, meaning you can carry out landscaping safe in the knowledge that the integrity of your work isn’t affected.

2. It’s easier to lay artificial grass

If you’re looking to replace your messy lawn with pristine artificial grass (sometimes referred to as AstroTurf), winter is a great time to do it.

This is because the ground isn’t as hard as in summer, making it easier to dig out the existing grass and install the new artificial grass.

Artificial grass contains drainage holes, so you don’t need to worry about snow and rain damaging your freshly laid lawn.

3. You’re less likely to disturb the local wildlife

Landscaping can be a challenge in the summer as you have to contend with birds, bees and other animals. There’s nothing more frustrating than disturbing a wasp’s nest as you work or installing a  fence only to find a flock of birds has decided to make it home!

In the winter, many animals have gone into hibernation, and birds have migrated south. This makes it a lot easier to carry out landscaping without disrupting the local critters.

4. You’re less likely to disturb the neighbours!

We typically only go outside in our gardens when we have to in the winter, whether it’s to put something in the bin or let the dog out.

This means that you can get on with any landscaping projects without worrying about disturbing the peace, as everyone will be indoors with a cup of tea watching Netflix!

In conclusion: Winter is the ideal time to do your landscaping

While you may think landscaping in November and December is off-limits, it’s actually a very sensible time to get all your installation work done.

If you’re looking for someone to carry out landscaping for you, winter is a great time to get it booked in.

It’s easier to get an appointment at the time and date you want, meaning you don’t need to worry about taking time off work. Plus, when the warm weather comes around, you’re all ready to relax in your brand new garden!
