what-are-gravel-boards-and-how-to-install-them

Gravel boards are an essential part of a well-built fence, protecting panels from moisture and ground contact. They sit at the base of a fence and help prevent damage caused by damp conditions.

In this article, we explain what gravel boards are, why they matter, and how to install them properly. With over 20 years of experience at G&G, we also share practical tips to help you achieve a durable, long-lasting fence.

What Are Gravel Boards

Gravel boards are horizontal boards fitted along the bottom of a fence, positioned between the ground and the fence panel. Their main purpose is to create a protective barrier that prevents direct contact with soil, helping to reduce moisture damage.

Why Gravel Boards Matter

Many people ask whether you need gravel boards for fencing, and in most cases, the answer is yes for long-term durability. By raising fence panels off the ground, gravel boards reduce the risk of rot, warping, and decay. This is especially important for timber fencing, which is more vulnerable to damp conditions.

What Happens Without Them
Without gravel boards, wooden fence panels are more likely to absorb moisture, leading to faster deterioration and a shorter lifespan.

Types of Gravel Boards and Material Comparison

Concrete Gravel Boards
Concrete gravel boards are one of the most durable options available. They are designed to slot into concrete fence posts and provide a solid, long-lasting barrier against moisture and ground contact.

Pros: Very long lifespan, resistant to rot and insects, minimal maintenance, strong and stable.
Cons: Heavier to handle, higher upfront cost, and more difficult to cut or adjust. Requires a diamond blade to cut.
Cost and maintenance: Higher initial cost but very low ongoing maintenance, making them cost-effective over time.
Aesthetics: Options include smooth concrete and patterned designs in both 6 and 12-inch sizes.

Here at G&G, we typically recommend concrete gravel boards for long-term installations where durability and minimal maintenance are the priority, especially in exposed or damp gardens.

Timber Gravel Boards
Timber gravel boards are typically pressure-treated to resist rot and are most commonly used with wooden fence posts. We recommend wooden gravel boards if you’re working with a tighter budget or want a natural look that blends nicely with wooden fencing.

Pros: Lower upfront cost, easier to cut and install, natural appearance that matches timber fencing.
Cons: Shorter lifespan than concrete, vulnerable to moisture over time, and requires treatment.
Cost and maintenance: Budget-friendly but may need regular treatment and eventual replacement.
Aesthetics: Warm, natural look that blends well with traditional garden fences.

Buy Composite Gravel Boards
Composite and Plastic Gravel Boards
Composite or plastic gravel boards are a modern alternative designed to combine durability with a lighter weight.

Pros: Resistant to rot, lightweight, easy to install, and long lifespan.
Cons: Higher cost than timber, may expand slightly with temperature changes.
Cost and maintenance: Mid to high cost with very low maintenance requirements.
Aesthetics: Clean, uniform finish available in a range of colours and designs.

Choosing the Right Material

Concrete gravel boards offer the highest durability and lowest maintenance, making them the most reliable long-term option. At G&G, we stock a wide range of concrete gravel boards in various sizes and designs, so you can achieve both strength and style. While timber and composite have their place, concrete remains the best choice for longevity.

  • Rubber mallet (to help position boards if needed)
  • Process
1. Check that the concrete posts are securely fixed in the ground and show no movement.

2. Use a spirit level and tape measure to ensure the posts are level and evenly spaced.

3. Using a shovel, level the ground between the posts. Move soil or gravel as needed to create a flat surface.

4. Slide the concrete gravel board into the post slots at ground level.

5. Check that the board sits level across the span. Adjust the ground as needed by adding or removing soil or gravel. You can prop the board with stones or bricks if required, then backfill any gaps. Use a rubber mallet to tap the board down into the soil.

6. Once the gravel board is level, insert the fence panel into the slots above it.

7. Check the alignment before moving on to the next section.

Installation with Timber Posts and Panel Systems

  • Tools and Materials Required
  • Timber or composite gravel boards
  • Fence panels
  • Galvanised screws or nails
  • Gravel board clip or fixing brackets (you can find specific gravel board fixings or galvanised L brackets. Alternatively, make your own timber fixings)
  • Drill or hammer
  • Spirit level
  • Tape measure
  • Shovel
  • Process
  1. Check that the timber posts are securely fixed in the ground and show no movement.
  2. Use a spirit level and tape measure to ensure the posts are level and evenly spaced.
  3. Using a shovel, level the ground between the posts. Move soil or gravel as needed to create a flat and even surface.
  4. Measure and mark the height for the gravel board fixing, ensuring equal height between posts. This should be as low as possible to ground level.
  5. Secure the clip or fixing to the post using galvanised screws.
  6. Position the gravel board at the base. Align the board using a spirit level and secure it in place using galvanised screws or nails.
  7. Install fence panels above the gravel board and secure them in place.
Using the correct screws for this job is essential. This guide will help you decide what type of screws you need for fence panel installation.

Installing Gravel Boards on a Sloping Garden
On a sloping garden, the stepped method using individual fence panels is usually the best approach. Each gravel board is installed level, with panels stepping down the slope to provide a consistent finish.

Alternatively, some homeowners choose to build a fence on site using horizontal rails and vertical boards, commonly known as feather edge or closeboard fencing. This allows the fence to follow the natural angle of the slope more closely, creating a smoother appearance.

The best approach depends on the gradient of your garden and the type of finish you want to achieve.

Common Mistakes When Installing Gravel Boards
Installing gravel boards is straightforward, but small mistakes can lead to bigger problems over time. Here at G&G, we often see issues caused by:

Poor measurements and alignment - If posts are not level or evenly spaced, gravel boards will not sit correctly, which affects the entire fence line.

Drainage - If the ground is not properly prepared, water can collect around the base of the board, reducing its effectiveness and potentially causing movement or damage. Making sure the ground is level and free-draining is key.

Incompatible materials used together - Timber boards used with systems designed for concrete can lead to weak fixings and reduced lifespan.

Skipping proper fixing methods - Using the correct fixings and ensuring everything is securely installed will help avoid movement, gaps, and premature failure.

Should You Install Gravel Boards Yourself or Hire a Professional
Gravel boards can be installed as a DIY project, depending on your experience and the complexity of the job. For simple installations on flat ground, DIY can be a cost-effective option if you are confident with basic tools and measurements.

For larger projects or sloping gardens, hiring a professional is often the better choice. Here at G&G Fencing and Landscape Supplies, we have seen how poor installation can lead to alignment issues and costly repairs.

We offer a full installation service across Kent, South London, and Essex, providing expert fitting using high-quality materials for a durable, long-lasting finish. While professional installation may cost more upfront, it ensures a high standard of work and delivers better long-term value.

Additional Tips for Long-Lasting Gravel Boards
Here are a few of our top tips for proper gravel board installations:

  • Ensure the ground is level and free-draining before installation to prevent water build-up and movement.
  • A well-prepared base helps keep the entire fence structure stable.
  • Timber gravel boards should be regularly treated to extend their lifespan and maintain their appearance. Applying a quality wood preservative helps protect against rot and weather damage
  • Choose gravel boards that match your fence design in size, material, and finish for a consistent look.

Conclusion
Gravel boards are a simple but essential addition to any fence. Choosing the right material and installing it correctly will ensure the best results.

Here at G&G Fencing and Landscape Supplies, we recommend investing in quality materials and proper installation to avoid common issues and achieve a long-lasting finish.
