DuraPost vs Concrete and Timber Posts
DuraPost offers several benefits over the alternatives, with weight being the most beneficial. A concrete post can weigh roughly 40kg, which means you need someone helping you just to move them around the site, never mind getting them into the ground. DuraPost posts weigh just a fraction of that, meaning one person can manage them without any assistance, and on a bigger job that genuinely adds up.
Timber posts, even when pressure-treated, are typically looking at about 10 years before rot or bug damage starts causing problems. DuraPost has a 25 year guarantee and doesn't deteriorate the same way, even somewhere wet and exposed. Concrete does better than timber on lifespan, but frost is its enemy. Ground that freezes and thaws repeatedly will crack concrete posts over time, sometimes faster than you'd expect.
Maintenance is honestly where steel wins most convincingly. Timber needs to be treated every couple of years. Concrete stains and goes grey and patchy, whereas DuraPost just needs a hose down occasionally. Building a Complete Boundary with DuraPost
DuraPost isn't just posts. It's a complete fencing system, and understanding the different components before you order means you won't find yourself short on something halfway through the job.
All made from galvanised steel, there are three key post shapes to consider:
- The classic H-section posts handle your straight runs, joining two panels together.
- A U-Channel is used to create a clean end of any run that meets a wall or solid structure.
- Corner posts are used where your fence changes direction, with U-channels securing the panels on each face.
Gates put significantly more stress on a post than a panel does. For that reason, we always recommend pairing DuraPost corner posts with a purpose-built gate bundle rather than trying to hang a gate off a standard fence post.
Gravel boards are worth including, too. Sitting panels directly on soil shortens their life, and the DuraPost composite boards are lightweight, stackable on sloped ground, and available in matching colours.
Post caps, capping rail, and cover strips round everything off and are the difference between a fence that looks finished and one that doesn't.

How to Install DuraPost Fence Posts
The design of the DuraPost system means installation can be carried out by one person. The actual installation is straightforward once you've got everything on site and your line marked out.
What You'll Need
Tools:
Post hole digger or manual fence bar (a powered auger if you're doing a longer run)
Spirit level
String line and pegs
Tape measure
Rubber mallet
Materials:
- DuraPost Classic posts (sized for your panel height)
- Post-mix concrete (roughly one bag per post for standard installations)
- Colour-matched screws
- Fence panels or boards of your choice
Allow a full day for a typical garden fence of six to eight bays when working alone. The concrete will need time to cure before you load each post with a panel. Most post-mix is firm enough to work against within 10 to 15 minutes, but leave it as long as you can before loading the post. Work bay by bay, rather than setting all posts at once.
Step-by-Step
It’s important to review the entire DuraPost range, including accessories, to plan your fence before starting this project. Once you have everything required on site, installation can begin.
- Mark out your post positions first, spacing them at panel-width intervals (1.83m is standard). Run a string line along the fence run to keep everything straight.
- Dig the holes. Aim for at least 600mm deep for a standard 1.8m panel, but consider going deeper on exposed sites or with taller panels. Check our post hole depth guide if you're unsure about your specific setup.
- Set your first post in post-mix concrete and get it plumb on both faces before the concrete goes off. We advise spending real time on the first two posts because every other post in the run follows their lead. Don’t rush this bit as the whole run can be affected. Allow the concrete to cure fully before moving on.
- Fit your first panel into the H-channel of the set post. If you are using gravel boards, these can also be suitable for setting the correct distance.
- Place your second post using the panel itself to set the correct spacing. Check for plumb, then concrete it in and allow it to cure.
Work bay by bay from there, fit each panel or gravel board before setting the next post. Don't be tempted to get all the posts in the ground first.
